Unveiled in 2014 as BMW’s second “Sports Activity Coupé”, the X4 blends X3 practicality with coupé lines, and its current G02 generation (2018–) is scheduled to bow out after 2025.
History
BMW introduced the first X4 (F26) in 2014, positioning it as the coupe-styled sibling to the contemporary X3. The second-generation G02 arrived for 2018, building on the same modular CLAR architecture that underpins the G01 X3, yet with a sweeping roofline and Sport Activity Coupé branding that set it apart in the compact luxury segment.
Design
The G02 X4 stands 1 621 mm tall but appears even lower thanks to its raked roof, frameless side windows, and LED light signatures front and rear. BMW’s kidney grille, now flanked by sharp LED headlights, flows into a sculptured bonnet and muscular wheel arches, while the tapered back end loses some cargo space in exchange for a fastback silhouette.
Performance & Engineering
Positioned mechanically between the utilitarian X3 and the larger X6, the G02 X4 offers rear-biased xDrive all-wheel drive and turbocharged engines ranging from four-cylinder 30i models to the twin-turbo M40i flagship. Adaptive M suspension and available M Sport brakes enhance the coupe-SUV driving dynamics BMW pioneered with this line.
Legacy
As BMW ends X4 production in 2025, the model leaves behind a distinct design template later echoed by competitors’ fastback crossovers. By blending sport-coupe aesthetics with crossover ride height and all-weather capability, the G02 cemented the segment BMW created after the original X6.
