Introduced at the 2015 Frankfurt and Tokyo motor shows, the BMW X1 (F48) took BMW’s small SUV from rear- to front-wheel-drive architecture, ushering the range into its second generation.
Design & Dimensions
Sized at 4 439 mm long, 1 821 mm wide and 1 612 mm tall, the F48 replaced the E84 with a taller, roomier body on a new transverse-engine platform. The profile shifted from the previous wagon-like stance to a more upright, five-door CUV silhouette aimed at maximizing interior space.
Drivetrain Shift
Where its predecessor used longitudinal engines and rear-wheel drive, the F48 employs a front-wheel-drive-based architecture, shared with MINI. xDrive all-wheel drive remains optional, but the standard layout becomes transverse engine with the front wheels propelling the vehicle.
Market Position
Launched in 2015 and positioned below the larger BMW X3, the second-generation X1 targets the subcompact luxury crossover segment. The F48 model code delineates this generation until the later U11 replaces it.
