Produced from 2013 through 2018, the BMW X5 (F15) was the third generation of the brand’s mid-size luxury crossover. Unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt International Motor Show, it replaced the original E70 X5 and set the stage for its later G05 successor.
History & Timeline
BMW introduced the F15 in September 2013, marking the first full redesign of the X5 range in six years. The model remained on sale until the 2018 model year, when it was phased out in favor of the more technology-laden G05 X5.
Global Launch Lineup
Initial 2014 models consisted of xDrive50i petrol, xDrive30d and M50d diesel offerings. December 2013 brought additional variants—xDrive40d, xDrive35i, xDrive25d and even the rear-drive sDrive25d, broadening engine choice and price positioning across export markets.
Model Positioning
As BMW’s mid-size crossover, the F15 bridged the gap between the smaller X3 and the full-size X7 (announced later). It leaned toward dynamic road manners and premium refinement, carrying over the X5’s reputation as the ‘Sport Activity Vehicle’ in BMW’s own SUV lexicon.
