BMW E87

BMW’s E87 hatchback is the five-door heart of the original 1 Series family that rolled out from 2004, marking a clean break from the previous 3 Series Compact and carving out a new entry rung in the Bavarian lineup.
History
Launched alongside its three-door (E81) and coupé (E82) siblings, the E87 hatch was produced until 2013. Collectively tagged the E8x generation, these cars replaced the 3 Series Compact to become BMW’s new gateway models.
Design & Positioning
Where the outgoing Compact was essentially a shortened E36/E46, the E87 was engineered on a dedicated platform sized pertly for city duty while preserving classic BMW rear-wheel-drive architecture and 50:50 weight distribution.
Successor
After nine model years the entire E8x family was retired, handing the baton to the second-generation F20/F21 1 Series that continued the lineage of compact BMW rear-drivers.
