Built from 1982 to 1994, the BMW E30 defined the modern compact sports sedan and introduced several technologies that spread to the entire BMW range.
Evolution of the 3 Series
The E30 arrived as the second-generation 3 Series, replacing the E21 and expanding the lineup beyond two-door saloons. BMW now offered 2-door and 4-door saloons, convertibles, plus its first estate/wagon in the 34-year history of the nameplate.
Powertrain & Technical Firsts
Engine choice grew to include four- and six-cylinder petrol units and—the first in the series—a 6-cylinder diesel. Underneath, the BMW 325iX brought an initial taste of all-wheel-drive to the 3 Series, later becoming a bedrock of the brand’s xDrive system.
Design & Market Position
Its crisp, boxy lines set a template for BMW compact luxury for the next decade. The wider model range allowed the E30 to compete simultaneously with compact saloons, open-top sports cars, and practical family estates.
Legacy
During a 12-year production run that spanned the rise of German performance engineering, the E30 underpinned BMW’s transition from niche brand to global player. Its architecture and drivetrain innovations filtered into later 3 Series, cementing its role as the blueprint for compact BMW excellence.
