BMW CS Concept

Unveiled at the 2007 Shanghai Auto Show, the BMW CS Concept signaled the brand’s potential return to a large luxury-coupe segment dormant since the BMW 8 Series (E31). The dramatic show car captured attention and came close to becoming a production BMW Gran Turismo before the 2008 financial crisis intervened.
Concept Background
The CS Concept made its global debut in April 2007, designed as a bold four-door flagship positioned above the then-current 6 Series. Its sweeping bonnet and recessed Hofmeister kink previewed stylistic themes that would soon influence BMW’s entire line-up and hinted at a spiritual successor to the vaunted 8 Series.
Near-Production Plans
Encouraged by positive feedback from BMW dealers, the company announced in 2008 that the concept would enter production as the BMW Gran Turismo. Engineering prototypes reportedly reached late development stages, promising a range of V8 and V10 powertrains matched to rear-wheel drive.
Cancellation
Amid worsening financial markets, BMW scrapped the project in November 2008, citing the global economic crisis. The decision freed capital for volume models such as the X1 and next-generation 5 Series, and the brand pivoted its flagship efforts to what would become the 6 Series Gran Coupe launched in 2012.
