Reviving a nameplate dormant since 1999, the second-generation BMW 8 Series (internal code G15) arrived in 2018 to recalibrate BMW’s grand-touring ambitions. Available in two-door, four-door, and convertible forms—known collectively as the G15 range—it replaced the F12/F13 6 Series line while nudging the brand upmarket.
Generations and Lineup
BMW’s G15 isn’t a single body style but an umbrella code for three closely related cars: the G14 8 Series Convertible, the G15 8 Series Coupé, and the G16 8 Series Gran Coupé. All have been built in parallel since 2018 at BMW Group’s Dingolfing plant, and the trio share chassis, powertrains, and a 1902 mm footprint width across their broad shoulders.
Design Focus
With the return of the 8 Series name, BMW emphasized long-hood, short-deck proportions and a low, wide stance to signal a modern grand-tourer aesthetic. Distinctive thin L-shaped lighting and frameless glass doors retain contemporary cues within a classic GT silhouette.
Market Context
By positioning the G15 range above the former 6 Series, BMW revived segment competition against Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupé and Porsche 911 Carrera – an effort to regain ground in a premium niche it had left in 1999 when the original E31 8 Series ended production.
