Introduced in 2009, the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo blended sedan luxury with hatchback versatility in an avant-garde fastback silhouette that aimed to carve out a new premium ‘progressive activity sedan’ niche.
Design Concept
The 5 Series Gran Turismo’s elongated fastback proportions place it between a traditional sedan and a wagon. Its 4998 × 1901 × 1559 mm footprint creates elevated, chair-like seating paired with a wide rear hatch for flexible cargo access.
Market Impact & Evolution
Marketed as a fusion of executive comfort and crossover practicality, the model never matched the brisk sales volumes of conventional 5 Series sedans. After a single generation spanning 2009-2017, BMW transitioned the name and concept into the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo for the 2018 model year.
