Unveiled at the 1961 Frankfurt Motor Show, the BMW 3200 CS delivered a swan-song for the company’s BMW 503 underpinnings while introducing elegant two-door coupé styling that foreshadowed the forthcoming New Class.
Design
Styled by Bertone under chief designer Wilhelm Hofmeister, the 3200 CS replaced the 503’s softer lines with a crisp, angular coupé silhouette. Prominent features included slim roof pillars, a pronounced Hofmeister kink in the C-pillar, and restrained chrome bright-work that echoed 1960s Italian grand-tourer taste.
Performance
Under its long bonnet sat a 3.2-litre all-aluminium V8 carried over from the 503, producing about 160 PS (118 kW). Power reached the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox, giving a top speed of roughly 200 km/h and contributing to the car’s 1450 kg kerb weight.
Legacy
Built for just two years and capped at 603 units, the 3200 CS was the final model spun off BMW’s separate-chassis 503 range. Its sleek shape and technical pedigree cleared the runway for the unitary, four-cylinder New Class that arrived from 1962 and redefined BMW’s post-war identity.
