BMW 319

The BMW 319 of the late-1930s was BMW’s bridge model—bigger and more refined than the small 303 that had launched the kidney grille, yet the last of its breed before the more famous BMW 320 swept in.
Design and engineering
Built on the same ladder frame and independent front suspension as the 303, the 319 stretched its wheelbase and added a larger 1.9-litre six-cylinder engine. Overall length reached 3.9 metres, body width just 1.44 m and height 1.55 m, keeping kerb weight down to only 850 kg for brisk acceleration in its day.
Generations and context
Produced between the 303 (1933–1934) and the 320 (1937–1938), the 319 refined the formula for BMW’s first passenger-car line-up without fundamentally altering it. It was one of the final BMW passenger cars before manufacturing shifted to wartime priorities.
Legacy
The 319 cemented BMW’s reputation for compact, lightweight six-cylinder luxury saloons and sharpened details—such as the twin-kidney grille—that would become trademark BMW cues for decades. Three years later, the 320 took the baton and pushed handling and performance further.
