Launched in 1934 as a 1.5-litre evolution of the original BMW 303, the BMW 315 replaced its pioneering six-cylinder predecessor and set the template for the mid-range models that would become the 320 two years later.
Background and Launch
The BMW 315 arrived one year after the 303, carrying over that car’s advanced pressed-steel frame and the world’s first inline-six in an affordable chassis. By downsizing the engine to 1.5 litres, BMW created a lighter, more economical package while retaining the smooth six-cylinder character that distinguished the brand.
Design and Dimensions
Compact even by 1930s standards, the 315 measured just 3900 mm from bumper to bumper and weighed only 830 kg. The upright 1550 mm roofline and 1440 mm track gave it a narrow, purposeful stance familiar from the 303, with BMW’s signature twin-kidney grille up front.
Generational Link
The 315 bridged the brief gap between BMW’s first 303 and the more powerful BMW 320 of 1936. In its two-year run it established the family lineage of small six-cylinder saloons that would define BMW’s mid-range offerings for decades.
