Introduced for the 2011 model year, the BMW X3 (F25) moved the compact-luxury SUV from niche to mainstream by growing larger, lighter, and more refined. Built on a 3-Series-derived platform and produced through 2017, it became BMW’s global volume leader in the premium-SUV segment.
Generations & Production
The second-generation X3 debuted at the 2010 Paris Motor Show for MY 2011 and was phased out in 2017 when the G01 took over. Assemblies in Spartanburg (USA), Araquari (Brazil), Gazipur (India), and Shenyang (China) ensured worldwide reach.
Design & Dimensions
Stretching 4 648 mm long, 1 881 mm wide, and 1 661 mm tall, the F25 is 78 mm longer and 28 mm wider than the E83 while weighing roughly 25 kg less thanks to extensive aluminum body panels and a high-strength-steel structure.
Engine & Performance Range
Powerplants spanned 2.0-liter four-cylinders to 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesels and petrol, along with the flagship X3 M40i of 2016 with its 360-hp turbo straight-six. An eight-speed ZF automatic and xDrive became standard across most markets.
