Introduced for the 2012 model year, the BMW F30/F31/F34 line-up marked the sixth generation of the storied 3 Series, spanning sedans, wagons and the first-ever long-wheelbase Gran Turismo hatchback.
History
Production ran from October 2011 through February 2019 at BMW plants in Germany, South Africa and India. Arriving seven years after the E90, the F30 family was designed to vault BMW back to the top of the compact-executive segment as it faced renewed competition from the Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class.
Body styles
The range was split across three related yet distinct chassis codes: F30 four-door sedan, F31 Touring wagon and F34 Gran Turismo. The Gran Turismo added 110 mm in wheelbase over the sedan, introducing a semi-fastback profile to target buyers seeking added rear-seat space without moving to the larger 5 Series.
Legacy and impact
Paving the way for today’s G20 generation, the F30 introduced BMW’s modular B-series engines, electric power steering and the brand’s first hybrid 3 Series. It remains a common sight on the used-car market, valued for its crisper infotainment and lighter chassis than the outgoing E90.
