One step up from the base BMW 2000, the 2000 GL sedan filled out the New Six range during the early 1970s with a subtle blend of understated luxury and practicality. Its understated grille, chrome touches and crisp “Hofmeister kink” made it instantly recognizable on European roads just before the 2004 arrived to replace it.
Design
Finished in an era when BMW was honing its modern identity, the four-door GL wore slim chrome bumper strips, pronounced kidney grilles and wrap-around rectangular lamps planted on a 4415 × 1610 mm footprint. At 1390 mm tall and only 1020 kg, it looked lower and lighter than contemporary rivals, giving every panel a purposeful, unadorned crispness.
Engineering
Because it channels the larger M10 inline-four fed by twin Solex carburetors, the GL’s mechanical brief was more about smooth long-distance cruising than outright speed. MacPherson struts up front, semi-trailing arms at the rear and front disc/rear drum brakes created the neutral, predictable feedback that later earned early-’70s BMWs a reputation among business travellers.
Legacy
Sold for only a short window before the BMW 2004 took its place, the 2000 GL nevertheless cemented the template for executive-size BMW saloons: restrained styling, rear-wheel drive balance, subtle trim upgrades. Collectors now view clean survivors as accessible entry points into classic New Six ownership, especially given their manageable 1020 kg weight and strong parts overlap with the rest of the 2000-series family.
