BMW expanded its compact portfolio with the 2 Series Gran Coupé, a four-door coupe that crowns the F44 family and serves as the direct evolution of the earlier BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe. It is the brand’s smallest sedan globally and the first front-wheel-drive-based three-box to wear the roundel.
Design
Short overhangs, frameless side glass, and a sharply tapered roof give the 2 Series Gran Coupé a fast-back silhouette despite its compact footprint. Sweeping L-shaped LED lamps front and rear, plus an enlarged kidney grille (ventilated by active shutters on most trims), visually link it to the larger 8 Series while the clamshell bonnet emphasizes its sporting intent.
Engineering
Built on BMW’s UKL2 front-wheel-drive architecture, the model shares suspension hard points with the X1 and X2 yet retains a standard multi-link rear axle on all but the sDrive18i. A near 50 kg reduction in kerb mass compared with the outgoing 2 Series coupé—achieved via hot-stamped high-strength steels and aluminium doors—offsets the FWD layout. xDrive variants add a multi-plate clutch that can divert up to 50 % of torque rearward in 0.1 second.
Global Reach
The Leipzig plant handles European demand, while BMW Group Plant Araquari in Brazil and BMW de México supply LATAM markets. Asia-Pacific cars roll off the Kulim line in Malaysia and Shenyang in China, where LWB and i2 electric prototypes are already undergoing trials.
