Arriving in 2020, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe wheels the brand’s sports-saloon DNA down to the sub-compact category, completing BMW’s modern four-door range from 1 to 8.
Positioning
Despite sharing the “2 Series” name with the rear-drive coupe, the Gran Coupe rides on BMW’s front-drive UKL2 platform, making it the marque’s smallest four-door sedan in most global markets. In China and Mexico the now-retired F52 1 Series sedan briefly occupied an even lower slot, but after its 2023 exit the Gran Coupe stands alone as the entry BMW four-door.
Design
Fastback rooflines, frameless side glass and short front overhangs disguise the transverse-engine layout, allowing the compact footprint to carry unmistakable BMW proportions. The enlarged kidney grille and lighting signatures align it with the latest BMW design language while maintaining the coupé-like profile the ‘Gran Coupé’ label implies.
Global role
By packaging executive-brand features into sub-compact dimensions, the 2 Series Gran Coupe serves urban buyers who need four doors without stepping up to the 3 Series. Sales started in early 2020 and continue across Europe, North America and Asia, solidifying BMW’s presence in the premium sub-compact sedan segment.
