BMW 1602

The BMW 1602 emerged from Munich in the mid-1960s as the first compact two-door powered by BMW’s new four-cylinder M10 engine, setting the template for what would become the 3 Series dynasty.
History
Introduced for the 1966 model year alongside the 02-range, the 1602 replaced the outgoing 1600 and carved out a new entry-level premium coupe segment for BMW. Positioned between the 1502 and later 2002, it gave Munich a nimble, affordable rear-driver that drew first-time buyers into the brand and proved that small cars could still feel distinctly Bavarian.
Engine & Chassis
Under the crisp lines sat a four-cylinder SOHC 1.6-litre M10 producing roughly 85 PS, mated to a four-speed manual transmission. The compact unit-body sat on MacPherson strut front and semi-trailing arm rear suspension borrowed from the Neue Klasse sedans, delivering the sharp handling that later became a BMW hallmark.
Legacy
By combining usable hatch-rear seating, frugal fuel consumption and agile road manners, the 1602 helped finance BMW’s later motorsport ambitions and directly paved the way for the 3 Series after production ended around 1975. Today, tidy survivors are prized by classic BMW clubs as the seed from which the modern compact-executive coupe grew.
