The 1972 Aston Martin Vantage was a short-lived, straight-six re-imagining of the V8 DBS and briefly served as the brand’s most affordable offering. For one model year it inverted the usual Vantage formula, offering less power but lower cost than other Astons.
History
When the DBS line moved to V8 power, Aston Martin sought to retain a six-cylinder option that could undercut its flagship cars on price. The 1972–1973 Vantage emerged as a limited devolution of the DBS, re-engineered with a 4.0-litre straight-six. Production wrapped quickly after the 1973 model year, and the nameplate later returned on far more potent machinery, leaving this single year as the mild-mannered anomaly in Aston history.
Design & Engineering
At 4.585 mm long and 1.706 tonnes, the Vantage retained the restrained grand-tourer proportions of the DBS while shedding most overt aggression associated with later Vantage models. The inline-six developed less output than the contemporary DBS V8 yet provided smoother rev characteristics and lighter nose weight, trading outright thrust for everyday usability and a keener entry ticket to Aston ownership.
