Aston Martin’s Vantage is the British marque’s hand-built, driver-focused sports car that sits at the sharp end of its GT range. Where earlier Astons wore the Vantage badge as a high-performance variant, today’s Vantage is effectively the “baby” that aims squarely at the Porsche 911 and other mid-size exotics.
History & Name Checkered Past
Aston Martin first used the Vantage label in the 1950s to denote more potent versions of its grand tourers. The badge re-emerged in the 1990s on a hotter take of the Virage, itself a large GT. The modern, stand-alone Vantage launched as a separate model line positioned below the DB range, ending the Virage’s tenure in the process while continuing an on-and-off naming tradition that spans decades.
Design & Dimensions
At 1 866 mm wide, the current Vantage is compact by Aston standards. Every panel is hand-beaten or hand-finished at Gaydon, giving the body surfacing a sculptural depth absent from mass-produced rivals. Short overhangs, a long bonnet and an aggressive aero package visually underline its claim as the leanest, most agile car Aston builds.
Market Position
Where earlier Vantage models were tuned variants of existing cars, today’s version is a standalone platform pitched against the Porsche 911 among other mid-engine and front-engine sports cars. By targeting a different buyer—one who might otherwise cross-shop a 911 or a newcomer-level Ferrari—Aston Martin widens its customer funnel without diluting the GT essence for which the brand is known.
