Unveiled at the 1988 Birmingham Motor Show, the Aston Martin Virage marked the British marque’s first clean-sheet grand tourer since the 1960s, serving as the direct successor to the long-running Aston Martin V8.
Design & Dimensions
Styled in-house and hand-built at Newport Pagnell, the Virage carried classic Aston proportions—4735 mm long, 1855 mm wide, and a low 1320 mm roofline—balancing muscular stance with 2+2 grand-touring practicality. Its flared wheel arches and distinctive grille set the visual tone for Aston Martin road cars of the 1990s.
Model Family & Evolution
At launch the Virage sat atop the range, replacing the defunct V8. A hotter Virage-based Vantage arrived in 1993, pushing power close to 500 hp. When the more focused Vantage began to eclipse the original in sales, Aston quietly rebadged the base Virage as the V8 Coupe from 1996 onward, signifying the end of the Virage nameplate as the marque pivoted toward the next-generation Vantage.
Legacy
Though produced in modest numbers, the 1988-1996 Virage reasserted Aston Martin’s engineering independence after tumultuous 1970s ownership changes. Its architecture and design language informed the DB7 and subsequent models, cementing the company’s template for front-engined, V8 grand tourers into the 21st century.
