Running from 1996 to 2012 across two generations, the Acura RL carried the flag as the luxury marque’s range-topping sedan, taking the baton from the Acura Legend and handing it to the RLX in 2013.
History
Debuting for 1996, the first-generation RL marked Acura’s shift away from the well-known Legend nameplate. Positioned above the TL and CL, it became the brand’s technological showcase and global flagship for sixteen model years before bowing out after 2012.
Design & Underpinnings
Every RL shared its basic structure with the Japanese-market Honda Legend, ensuring a proven longitudinal front-drive/AWD platform. Sheetmetal and interior trims were tailored to North-American luxury expectations, adding quieting insulation and features such as GPS-linked climate control to justify the “Refined Luxury” label implied by the RL name.
Generations
Two distinct generations appeared: 1996–2004 and 2005–2012. While both sat on a 2,800 mm (110.2 in) wheelbase, overall length stretched to 4,994 mm in later years, giving the car a visibly more substantial presence without abandoning its understated styling cues.
Legacy
As the last Acura flagship to wear the “RL” badge, the model bridged the 1990s Japanese luxury wave and the smarter-tech era that followed. It established many feature firsts—Active Noise Cancellation, DVD-based navigation, and Super Handling AWD among them—that were refined and carried into the successor RLX.
