Acura Legend

Launched alongside the new Acura brand in 1985, the Legend was Honda’s first bid to win a slice of the lucrative mid-size luxury segment in North America, serving as the marque’s flagship for a full decade.
History
The Acura Legend debuted in 1985 and remained Honda’s chosen flagship for Acura until the 1996 model year. Positioned against European and domestic luxury sedans, it gave the fledgling Acura division an immediate contender. At the end of 1995, the car was rechristened the 3.5RL for North-American markets, ushering in the KA9 chassis generation sold elsewhere as the Honda Legend.
Role in the Acura lineup
From day one, the Legend occupied the top rung of the three-model Acura range introduced in 1986—above the Integra and later the Vigor. It provided Japanese reliability in a class where size, quietness and premium features were the price of entry, helping establish the then-new brand’s credibility among American and Canadian sedan buyers.
Legacy
Its decade-long tenure sowed the seeds for all future Acura flagships, even as direct continuity passed to the longer, more powerful 3.5RL. The Legend name itself faded from North-American showrooms, but the engineering and market lessons learned would underpin every RL/RLX that followed.
