Acura ARX-02a

Acura stepped up to Le Mans’ top class in 2009 with the ARX-02a, the brand’s first P1 prototype after earlier success in P2. Purpose-built for the American Le Mans Series, the car represented Honda’s U.S. performance arm taking on factory Audi diesels and factory Peugeots.
History
Developed in just six months at the Honda Performance Development (HPD) center in California, the ARX-02a debuted at the 2009 12 Hours of Sebring. It replaced the ARX-01 (built by Wirth Research) that had run in LMP2, marking Acura’s graduation to the premier LMP1 category in North America.
HPD supplied a 4.0-liter normally-aspirated V8 producing around 550 bhp, mated to a six-speed sequential Xtrac gearbox. Two cars were fielded by Highcroft Racing and de Ferran Motorsports, running Michelin tires and a high-downforce aero package that differed from European P1 designs, optimized for ALMS circuits rather than Le Mans.
Performance & Record
Despite reliability issues typical of a rush program, the ARX-02a scored pole position on four of its nine ALMS starts. Its only victory came at the 2009 Utah Grand Prix at Miller Motorsports Park, driven by David Brabham and Scott Sharp.
The season ended with Highcroft second in the LMP1 championship behind Audi, while the car was immediately withdrawn at year-end as Acura realigned toward other racing efforts. The ARX-02a’s single-season campaign leaves it as a transitional prototype between Acura’s P2 roots and the later HPD ARX-series cars that would race in both LMP1 and LMP2 under the HPD brand name.
