Lotus Eleven

From 1956 to 1958 Lotus produced the Eleven, a compact front-engined sports-racing machine whose limited production—barely 270 examples—nevertheless left a sizeable footprint on both club motorsport and the scale-model industry.
Design
Colin Chapman’s team wrapped the Eleven in a sleek, all-aluminium body only 3.5 m long, 1.5 m wide and just 810 mm high. The result was minimal frontal area and a feather-like kerb weight that magnified the modest power of its Coventry-Climax and Ford engines.
Evolution
Lotis continually refined the model through low-drag Le Mans and potent Club versions, plus a handful of 1958 cars retrospectively nick-named “Lotus 13”. These tweaks usually meant lighter panels, improved braking, and small capacity engines tuned to rev beyond 7,000 rpm.
Legacy
Despite its brief two-year run, the Eleven scored class wins at Le Mans, Sebring and Silverstone, making it a favourite of gentleman racers worldwide. Plastic kit manufacturer Airfix immortalised its shape in 1:32 scale, ensuring the car’s shark-nosed profile became instantly recognisable to generations of car enthusiasts.
