Built purely for Formula 2 competition in 1964, the Lotus 32 squeezed twelve championship-focused chassis out of Lotus Parts Ltd and gave Jim Clark and Mike Spence fresh machinery to chase European silverware.
Origins
Team Lotus took the proven Lotus 27 Formula Junior monocoque and adapted it to the stiffer 1-litre F2 regulations. Only twelve Lotus 32 chassis were constructed, each earmarked for privateer squads and the factory-supported Ron Harris Team Lotus effort.
1964 Season Campaign
Ron Harris entered four cars for the key European F2 series. Mike Spence dominated the Autocar British Formula 2 Championship in one chassis, sealing the title by season’s end. Jim Clark, splitting time between F1 and sports-car duties, still took a works Lotus 32 to fourth in the Trophées de France Championship.
Package and Specs
At just 3530 mm long, 1447 mm wide and 812 mm tall, the Lotus 32 weighed barely 400 kg. The compact steel monocoque carried a front-mounted Cosworth-Ford 1.0-litre four, perfectly matched to the era’s 2-litre class limit while keeping mass to a minimum.
Legacy
The 1964 season proved to be its only front-line year; the rapid evolution of F2 regulations the following winter made the design obsolete. Nevertheless, the handful of surviving cars remain staples of historic racing grids and serve as a snapshot of Colin Chapman’s obsession with light, agile single-seaters.
