Lexus IS (XE20)

Lexus introduced the second-generation IS in 2005, codename XE20, aimed squarely at compact premium sport-sedan territory occupied by BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Its sharper styling and rear-wheel drive architecture raised Lexus’s performance credibility while staying true to the brand’s quiet-luxury ethos.
Design & Development
Designers moved away from the rounded lines of the first IS, giving the XE20 a taut, wedge-shaped profile with the first use of Lexus’s “L-finesse” surfacing language. The flared rear quarter-panels, pronounced shoulder line, and fastback roof created a more muscular stance without enlarging the footprint beyond mid-size sedan norms.
Engine & Drivetrain Range
Markets received three initial flavors: the IS 250 with a 204 hp 2.5-liter V6, the six-speed-manual-or-auto IS 300 with a 228 hp 3.0-liter inline-six, and the range-topping IS 350 producing 306 hp from its 3.5-liter V6. All versions retained rear-wheel drive architecture, while all-wheel drive became optional on the IS 250 and standard on later diesel and hybrid variants introduced outside North America.
Generations & Lifecycle
Produced from 2005 through 2013, the XE20 gave rise to the IS F sport sedan (5.0-liter V8, 416 hp) and the IS C convertible. When the third-generation IS arrived, Lexus spun off a two-door derivative—the RC coupe—effectively continuing some styling and chassis elements originally debuted with the second-gen IS.
