Lamborghini revealed the Murciélago 40th Anniversary as a special edition to mark four decades since the very first Lamborghini rolled out of Sant’Agata in 1963. Limited in numbers and trimmed with unique details, it celebrates the first production model of the new millennium under the raging bull badge.
Limited-edition purpose
Built only for the 2003 model year, the 40th Anniversary Murciélago was conceived as a collector’s piece rather than a radical technical overhaul. Just 50 examples—ten for each of Lamborghini’s five then-existing markets—left the factory to guarantee exclusivity.
Design cues
Carbon-fiber engine covers painted in a two-tone scheme—Matte Silver lower and Metallic Grey upper—set the anniversary edition apart from the standard Murciélago. Inside, the seats wore specially quilted leather with contrast stitching that echoed historic Lamborghini interiors, and “Lamborghini 40th Anniversary” plaques appeared on the dashboard and door sills.
Performance & legacy
Mechanically the car remained the original Murciélago: a 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V12 sending 580 PS to all four wheels via Lamborghini’s first viscous-coupling AWD system. While it brought no extra horsepower, the edition reinforced the Murciélago’s role as the brand’s halo car at the dawn of the Audi era and remains one of the last pure V12 flagships before the Aventador lineage took over.
