History
The Espada debuted at the 1968 Geneva Motor Show as Lamborghini’s practical supercar: a genuine four-seater designed to widen the market beyond two-seat exotics. Sales tallied 1,217 cars across the full decade, making it the company’s best-seller for most of the 1970s and the model that funded later V-12 icons.
Design
With its fastback roofline, wide glass engine cover and sharp Bertone creases, the Espada measured 4.67 m long and only 1.19 m tall. Pop-up headlamps and a roof-high rear window created exceptional rear-seat headroom while maintaining a sports-car silhouette.
Performance
Under the long hood sat a front-mid-mounted 3.9-litre V-12 delivering 0-100 km/h in the low 7-second bracket and a top speed just beyond 240 km/h—heady figures for a 1,480 kg four-seater in its era.
Legacy
The Espada remains the only four-seat, front-engine Lamborghini coupé to reach production, and its decade-long sales helped safeguard parent Automobili Lamborghini through recessions and oil crises that felled several contemporaries.
