Created in 1980 by Bertone, the Lamborghini Athon remains one of Lamborghini's most striking concept cars, a pure styling exercise built to showcase future design language for the Italian marque.
Genesis of the Athon
Unveiled at the 1980 Turin Auto Show by carrozzeria Bertone, the Athon put a futuristic electric-age spin on the mid-engine Lamborghini silhouette. It rode on a shortened Urraco/P250 chassis, keeping the transverse V8 and five-speed manual while draping the mechanical parts in an angular glass-house body that would influence Bertone production designs for years.
Design language
Sharp side strakes, pop-up headlamps and a 360-degree canopy of tinted glass turned the Athon into a rolling showcase of Bertone’s late-70s computer-drafted forms. The slim roll-bar aft of the seats and blade-like rear pillars produced a visual lightness rare in the wedge era, creating a look that foreshadowed concept approaches in the Jalpa and Countach developments.
From show car to survivor
Stored for decades in the Bertone collection, the single runner resurfaced restored and road-legal at the 2021 Concours d’Élégance in Ault Park. Now displayed by private collectors, it stands as the only existing Athon, representing both an experimental engineering test bed and a snapshot of design bravura that 1980s Lamborghini itself never brought to the road.
