Kia Rio

Spanning 1999–2023, the Kia Rio was the Korean firm’s answer to subcompact buyers who wanted a practical, no-nonsense small car. After four generations, fading demand led to the line’s quiet cancellation.
Development
Kia launched the Rio in late 1999 as the replacement for the Kia Avella. From the outset it was offered in three distinct silhouettes—three- and five-door hatchbacks plus a four-door sedan—allowing the model to compete in both Europe and North-American markets on price and footprint.
Running Production
Across roughly 24 years, the Rio received four complete redesigns. All variants used transverse-mounted inline-four engines—gasoline in most markets, with small turbo-diesels popular in Europe—and front-wheel drive was standard throughout. By the final 2020-2023 MY, overall length had grown to 4 210 mm yet the car still sat squarely within subcompact class limits.
End of the Road
Kia quietly ended Rio production in 2023 after a steady drop in global sales. Looming economic headwinds and buyers’ pivot toward crossovers made the continued investment uneconomical, so resources were directed to the newer Kia K3 and small-SUV range.
Legacy
While never a headline-grabber, the Rio fulfilled its brief to be an affordable, low-fuss commuter for two decades. It served as Kia’s fleet staple in many regions and, by sheer volume, became one of the company’s best-selling nameplates of the 2000s and 2010s.
