Slotting above the Optima, the Kia Cadenza — marketed in South Korea as the Kia K7 — debuted in 2010 to fill the vacuum left by the retired Kia Opirus. This four-door, full-size sedan was Kia’s first global attempt at an executive-level car aimed at markets from Seoul to North America.
Origins and Positioning
Kia introduced the K7/Cadenza in 2010 as the replacement for the long-running Opirus, itself a rebadged Hyundai Grandeur. Corporate strategy saw the newcomer adopt a dedicated platform that allowed Kia to move the vehicle up-market without encroaching on Hyundai Genesis territory.
Design and Dimensions
During launch, Kia designers emphasized a sleek, fastback roofline that disguised the car’s large footprint. At 4 965 mm long and just 1 475 mm tall, the sedan has proportions significantly longer and lower than typical mid-size offerings, reinforcing its executive billing.
Generations and Naming
Though globally marketed as Cadenza, the same model wore the K7 badge in its home market. In 2021, Kia quietly retired both the Cadenza and K7 nameplates in favor of the all-new Kia K8, signalling a design shift under the new “Opposites United” language.
