Slotting between 1997 and 2002, the Jaguar XJ (X308) served as the ultimate expression of the long-serving XJ40 platform. With its new V8 heart and subtly modernised styling, it bridged classic British saloon elegance with contemporary performance demands.
Positioning and timeline
Built on the same underpinnings introduced since 1986, the X308 marked the third and final development of the XJ40 architecture. Production ran from 1997–2002, after which the thoroughly aluminium-intensive XJ (X350) took over.
Powertrain and chassis
Jaguar replaced inline-six and V12 options with the freshly-developed AJ-V8 engine family. Coupled to Jaguar’s independent rear suspension, the X308 delivered a cleaner power band and improved refinement while retaining the supple ride requested of a British luxury saloon.
Design tweaks
External changes were evolutionary: crisper headlamp detailing, a larger grille, and reshaped bumpers modernised the familiar XJ silhouette without abandoning its heritage. Width is pegged at 1 798 mm—town-friendly dimensions for a full-size contender.
