Launched in late 1989 as the Accord Inspire, Honda’s mid-size sedan served as the plusher twin to the Vigor/Saber and filled the lineup at Japanese Honda Clio dealerships.
Origins
Honda introduced the first Inspire in December 1989 at its higher-end Clio sales network, positioning it beside sibling models at Verno stores. Built on the Accord platform, the car let Honda offer near-premium features without creating a separate model line. Over two generations the name kept this relationship, acting as a domestic crown above the standard Accord.
Body & Dimensions
Measuring 4940 mm long, 1845 mm wide and 1475 mm tall, the last Inspire sat lower and longer than common European D-segment sedans. At 1620 kg it carried the extra sound-deadening and luxury kit expected of its flagship role, yet retained practical four-door packaging and Accord mechanical commonality for easier service.
Legacy
By the 2010s Honda merged the Inspire line into the ninth-generation Accord programme, retiring the stand-alone nameplate in its home market while many styling cues drifted into global Accord variants. The brief run proves Honda’s ongoing experiment with tiered Japanese retail networks and the persistent overlap between mainstream and luxury mid-size sedans.
