The Aviator first bowed for model-years 2003–2005 as an upscale sibling to the Ford Explorer. Lincoln shelved the badge after 2006, and the void was filled briefly by the Lincoln MKX—effectively its successor. A full second generation roared back for the 2020 model year, completely re-engineered and re-announced as a modern anthem for the brand’s SUV ambitions.
Design and Dimensions
Stretching 4909 mm long, 1931 mm wide and 1814 mm tall, the Aviator stands squarely against European and Japanese mid-size flagships while massing 2269 kg—comfortable heft for large families who demand quiet luxury. Sheet-metal surfacing has migrated from modest first-gen lines to the sleeker, more aeronautical silhouette that echoes Lincoln’s current formal language: a crisp light-bar front, tapered roof, and turbine-inspired wheels.
Generations and Positioning
Two distinct generations define the Aviator story. Gen 1 (2003–2005) rode on the U2 platform with V8 power and three rows for seven. After the hiatus, Gen 2 (2020–present) adopts the rear-wheel-drive/unibody CD6 architecture and introduces turbocharged V6 engines plus a Grand Touring plug-in hybrid variant.
