Introduced for 2008, the fifth-generation Ford Taurus revived the nameplate barely a year after Ford had retired it, morphing the mid-cycle Ford Five Hundred into a full-size flagship sedan.
Return and Rebranding
Ford resurrected the Taurus badge in 2008 by extensively reworking the 2005–2007 Ford Five Hundred. The redesign lifted the sedan from mid-size to full-size status for the first time in its lineage and positioned it as Ford’s new flagship after the Crown Victoria exited retail showrooms.
Body Styles and Markets
Alongside the conventional four-door sedan, Ford added the Taurus X—a three-row wagon variant. While North American buyers saw both nameplates, Ford continued to market the vehicle as the Five Hundred in the Middle East, Mexico, and some other regions.
Model Years and Succession
The fifth-generation Taurus remained in showrooms only through the 2009 model year, after which Ford introduced the redesigned sixth-generation Taurus for 2010. Despite its brief two-year run, the generation marked a key pivot from the Five Hundred and placed the Taurus firmly in the full-size sedan segment.
