Launched in June 1995 and sold through 1999, the third-generation Ford Taurus marked the first full-body makeover of Ford’s mainstream mid-size sedan, replacing the rounded second-generation car with sharper styling while keeping its proven chassis.
History
Ford put the third-gen Taurus into production in June 1995 for the 1996 model year. The new car replaced the second generation and filled the gap between the compact Contour and full-size Crown Victoria in Ford’s North American lineup, remaining on sale until model-year 1999.
Design
Unlike the carry-over mechanicals, the exterior was fully redesigned—the first complete restyle since the model’s 1986 debut. Available as both a four-door sedan and a five-door wagon, the Taurus shared showroom floor with its Mercury twin, the Sable.
