Between 1957 and 1959, Ford sold the world’s only mass-produced retractable hardtop convertible—the Fairlane 500 Skyliner—introducing a then-novel Hide-Away Hardtop that folded neatly into the trunk and previewed tomorrow’s roof technology.
History
The Skyliner grew out of the earlier Ford Fairlane Crown Victoria Skyliner and debuted mid-1957 model year as part of the Fairlane 500 series. In the shortened 1959 production run Ford rebranded it the Fairlane 500 Galaxie Skyliner to align with the new Galaxie line, but the fundamental engineering and the name recognition built over 1957–58 remained intact. Total production lasted just three model years.
Engineering
Central to the car was the Hide-Away Hardtop mechanism—originally developed for the 1956 Lincoln Continental Mark II concept—that used seven electric motors, 10 power relays, and a complex series of interlocking latches to stow or raise the steel roof in about 40 seconds. Sensors locked the trunk lid once the roof was down, preserving luggage space inside a reinforced cavity over the live rear axle.
Legacy
Although sold only through 1959, the Skyliner forced competitors and consumers alike to take retractable hardtops seriously, influencing later Ford roof systems and paving the way for modern power-folding convertibles. Collectors prize surviving examples for their intricate mechanism, evocative 1950s styling, and the audacious engineering confidence the car embodied.
