Introduced for 1955, the Ford Fairlane Crown Victoria Transparent Top turned heads with its Plexiglas roof panel—an industry first—and became an instant collectable among 1950s American design statements.
History
Ford added the distinctive Transparent Top roof to the high-line Crown Victoria to one-up rivals during the 1955 model year. Contrary to later lore, Ford literature never labeled this car “Skyliner”; brochures and dealer order forms listed it only as “Transparent Top” (abbreviated “T/P” or “T/T”). The feature wasn’t repeated on the 1956 cars, giving the ’55 a one-year production rarity.
Design
At 5042 mm long and 1928 mm wide, the Fairlane Crown Victoria’s signature feature was the color-keyed Plexiglas panel over the front seats. Bright stainless steel trim framed the roof and wrapped the distinctive chrome “tiara” pillar that perched above the B-pillars, creating a floating-roof look that photographs could not prepare buyers for in person.
Collectability
Because the Transparent Top option added cost and could fade upholstery in strong sunlight, fewer were ordered than the standard steel-roof Crown Victoria. Surviving untouched examples trade at premium prices, prized by enthusiasts as the first U.S. production car with an exposed glass panel and the only crown-roof Fairlane ever made.
