History
Sold only in calendar year 1907, the Ford Model R replaced the earlier Model N. It occupied the same market segment—an affordable, lightweight four-cylinder—and was immediately succeeded in 1908 by the now-famous Model T, making the Model R a short but critical transitional model in Ford’s early era.
Design & Engineering
With an all-up weight of 634 kg, the Model R kept the compact footprint and simple mechanics that had proven popular on its Model N predecessor. It continued to target budget-conscious drivers with minimal running gear and no extra weight, laying the groundwork for the later mass-production achievements of the Model T.
Legacy
Because of its single-year availability, surviving examples are rare today. Nevertheless, the Model R represents a direct developmental step toward the standardized, affordable automobile that Ford would deliver to millions with the Model T.
