Reborn two decades after the first modern Ford GT, the second-generation Ford GT takes the blue-oval’s historic Le Mans prototype into a lean, carbon-fiber era. Built from 2017, it redefines American supercar performance and aerodynamic engineering for the 21st-century track-and-street market.
Design
Every millimeter of its carbon-fiber body is shaped by aerodynamics: a flying buttress roof channels air onto the active rear wing, while ducts at each corner vent turbulent pressure and add downforce. At 4 762 mm long, 2 004 mm wide, and only 1 110 mm tall, the GT’s proportions mirror racing prototypes yet license plates still fit heading down the boulevard.
Engineering & Specs
The GT’s 1385 kg curb weight comes courtesy of a bonded-aluminum and carbon-fiber chassis that sliced significant mass versus the earlier 2004–2006 edition. Ford paired this rigid tub with pushrod suspension and active chassis systems—delivering a technical leap that echoes the original 1960s GT40’s ‘everything for the win’ philosophy, updated for modern regulations and everyday usability.
Legacy & Precedent
Following the limited-run 2004–2006 GT, the new model had to uphold Le Mans lore: it debuted to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ford’s first victory at La Sarthe in 1966. That racing heritage explains why the second-generation GT integrates competition-grade aero, materials and powertrain management taken straight from Ford’s endurance-racing program.
