The Ford Consul Classic was a compact four-door family saloon built by Ford between 1961 and 1964, slotting between the outgoing Consul and the upcoming Corsair. It is chiefly remembered today as a short-lived bridge in Ford's model line-up at the start of the 1960s.
Design and Size
With tidy, almost American-influenced styling, the Classic measured 4 337 mm long, 1 651 mm wide and just 1 422 mm tall — a footprint larger than a typical Anglia yet smaller than the Zephyr of the day. At 940 kg curb weight, it was light enough for modest four-cylinder power, favouring economy over outright pace.
Market Position and Replacement
Launched in 1961, the Classic stepped in where the regular Ford Consul left off. Ford pulled the plug after only three model years; the lines and tooling were largely carried over, re-emerging in 1964 as the sleeker Ford Corsair, giving the Classic a remarkably brief production span.
