Built by Ford of Britain, the Ford Anglia rose from the ashes of the pre-war Ford 7Y and became the affordable small family car of the swinging sixties before handing the torch to the Escort.
60-Year Timeline
The Anglia badge first appeared in 1939 on the Anglia E04A, growing through the 100E (1953) to the best-known 105E introduced in 1959. Overall production stretched until 1967, with 1,594,486 cars sold across all iterations.
Design & Effect
The final 105E set itself apart with a crisp, angular body, reverse-rake rear window, and a compact footprint that appealed to city drivers. Sharing architecture with the Ford Prefect and Ford Popular kept costs low while boosting mainstream acceptance.
Legacy
With four generations spanning 28 active years, the Anglia created a lasting template: simple, economical transport that funneled British drivers toward Ford. When the line ended, the Escort rolled in carrying much of its market ethos to even bigger sales.
