Ford’s 7Y was the short-lived 1938–39 refresh of the popular Model Y, serving as the final step before the Anglia took over. In just two years it racked up more than 65,000 sales while carrying pre-war British motoring into a new decade.
History & Production
Built at Ford’s Dagenham plant, the 7Y replaced the Model Y in August 1938 and itself bowed out in October 1939 as the Anglia arrived. Those 14 months saw 65,098 examples roll off the line, making it one of Britain’s best-selling small cars at the outbreak of World War II.
Design
The 7Y kept the Model Y’s bones but gained a new, wider, painted grille and revised front valance, tidier bumpers, and subtly reshaped rear wings. Inside, minor trim upgrades and a tidier instrument panel aimed to modernize the pre-war look without departing from Ford’s utilitarian formula.
Dimensions & Weight
Measuring just 3.76 m long and 1.45 m wide, the 7Y weighed only 670 kg—light even by 1930s standards. That compact footprint made it easy to manoeuvre in narrow British streets and kept running costs low.
