Ford's A-Series was a range of light trucks produced in the UK during the 1970s and 1980s to fill a market gap between the Transit and D-Series models. Marketed as 'Ford's Go-Between', it was eventually succeeded by the Ford Transit. Production ceased in 1983.
History
The Ford A-Series was manufactured by Ford UK at their Langley plant in Berkshire. It was designed to bridge the gap between the Transit and the larger D-Series, targeting vehicles between 3.5 tons and 5.5 tons Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW).
Market Performance
Although the A-Series sold relatively well in countries like France and West Germany, it had limited success in Britain. By the time production ended in 1983, Ford considered it no longer viable, possibly due to competition from models like the Mercedes-Benz T2 and Chrysler's Dodge 50, as well as regulatory requirements for tachographs in vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.
Legacy
The Ford A-Series was eventually phased out in favor of continuing to market the Transit, which became Ford's primary light commercial vehicle offering. The A-Series was succeeded by the Ford Transit.
