In 2012 Ferrari delivered the one-off SP12 EC, a coachbuilt roadster commissioned for Eric Clapton on the mechanical platform of the 458 Italia. The project is a rare entry in Ferrari’s exclusive Special Projects programme, pairing race-derived V8 performance with bespoke design.
Origins
Ferrari’s in-house Styling Centre built the SP12 EC as a personal request from Clapton, who wanted a modern car echoing the flat-rear-deck silhouette he admired in the 512 BB of the 1970s. The name melds ’Special Projects’, the sequential number 12, and the guitarist’s initials.
Design & Construction
The aluminium bodywork is entirely new, its crisp lines, flying-buttress C-pillars and quad round tail-lamps referencing traditional mid-engine Berlinettas while preserving the 458’s mid-rear proportions. Inside, Clapton specified dark leather upholstery with custom switchgear, all trimmed by Ferrari’s Carrozzeria Scaglietti artisans.
Power-train & Dynamics
Under the reshaped carbon-fiber bonnet sits the stock 458 Italia’s 4.5-liter naturally-aspirated V8, paired with the seven-speed dual-clutch F1 transmission and E-Diff. The donor chassis, suspension and carbon-ceramic brakes remain untouched, delivering 0–100 km/h in about 3.4 seconds and a 325 km/h top speed identical to the original 458.
Generations & Legacy
As a strictly single-example creation, the SP12 EC has no direct successors. It survives as one of the most publicised personal commissions in Ferrari history, regularly displayed at events such as Goodwood and Cavallino Classic, and serves as design inspiration for subsequent one-off SP builds.
