Unveiled in 2009, the Ferrari P540 Superfast Aperta is a single, coach-built convertible born from a special client’s request and built on the 599 GTB Fiorano chassis. As the only one in existence, it represents Ferrari’s willingness to craft completely bespoke machines for its most dedicated patrons.
Commissioning the one-off
Designed by Ferrari Styling Centre and Pininfarina, the P540 was requested by American collector Edward Walson, son of the cable television pioneer. The project began after Walson saw a similarly gold-colored car from the 1968 film "Marvels of the Modern World" and asked Ferrari to recreate the spirit as an open car. Over 18 months, engineers converted a donor 599 GTB Fiorano into an aluminum-bodied roadster while matching the original film car’s visual cues.
Design and engineering
All bodywork ahead of the A-pillar was redesigned for torsional strength, including new front fenders, bonnet, rear quarters and a twin-hump roll-bar fairing. The windshield frame was shortened and reinforced; HID headlamps and bespoke carbon-fiber elements were fitted. Weight rose only marginally compared with the GTB coupe, thanks to extensive use of aluminum and carbon composites.
Performance profile
Mechanically identical to the 599 GTB Fiorano, the P540 retains the 6.0L 65° V12 producing 611 hp at 7,600 rpm and 448 lb-ft at 5,600 rpm, paired to the F1-SuperFast 6-speed sequential gearbox. Ferrari states 0-100 km/h in 3.7 s and 330 km/h flat-out—figures unchanged despite the loss of a roof.
Legacy
Delivered to Walson in late 2009 and formally presented at the Ferrari World Finals in Mugello, the P540 Superfast Aperta remains a unique artifact that demonstrates Ferrari’s Special Projects division capability. Alongside the P540, the same division would later build other one-offs like the SP12 EC and the recent SP3JC.
