Unveiled in 1989 at the Tokyo Motor Show, the Ferrari Mythos was a radical mid-engined concept that stretched the Testarossa platform into an open-air design statement. Built solely as a styling exercise by Pininfarina, it never reached production yet still influences Ferrari’s design language three decades later.
Who Built It & Where
The Mythos was crafted by Pininfarina around Ferrari’s Testarossa chassis, blending the marque’s V-12 powertrain with an airy barchetta silhouette. Its debut in Tokyo underlined Japan’s importance as a luxury car showcase at the close of the 1980s.
Design Details
At just 4 305 mm long, the compact two-seater replaced conventional doors with cut-down body sides, a sweeping dorsal fin and a sharply truncated tail. Pininfarina’s clean surfacing and pop-up headlights channelled the Testarossa’s mechanical heart through a distinctly futurist form.
After the Show
Like most Ferrari showcars, the Mythos stayed a one-off, but it previewed cues later seen on limited-series models like the F50 and the 360 Modena-based barchettas. The concept has since toured global museums while remaining in Maranello’s heritage collection.
