Ferrari 340 Mexico

Built in the early 1950s, the Ferrari 340 Mexico was a competition-focused grand tourer intended to conquer the grueling Carrera Panamericana. Its specialized chassis and high-revving Lampredi V-12 made it one of Maranello’s first dedicated endurance racers for North America.
Origins and Purpose
Ferrari developed the 340 Mexico specifically for the 1952 Carrera Panamericana, creating a lightweight berlinetta on the 212 Export chassis. Engineers enlarged the 4.1-litre ‘Lampredi’ V-12, pushing output above 280 bhp to cope with Mexico’s 2,000-mile open-road sprint at average speeds above 110 mph. Just four examples were constructed—three Vignale Spyders and one Coupé—each distinguished by steeply raked windscreens and minimal bodywork.
Racing Record
Three 340 Mexicos started the 1952 race. Chassis 0224 AT, privately entered by Luigi Chinetti’s North American Racing Team, finished third overall behind two factory Mercedes 300 SLs—a remarkable result for a small Italian team. Mechanical attrition sidelined the remaining cars, yet the model had proven both pace and reliability, influencing Ferrari’s later long-distance racers.
Legacy
Though overshadowed by the later 250 series, the 340 Mexico helped refine Ferrari’s understanding of endurance aerodynamics and power-to-weight balance. Surviving cars are among the earliest competition Ferraris in American hands and remain occasional centrepieces of vintage events like the Pebble Beach Concours.
