Dodge Shadow

Sold from 1987 to 1994, the Dodge Shadow was Chrysler’s compact hatchback answer to the import wave, available in both three- and five-door body styles, plus a later convertible.
Generations
Based on Chrysler’s P-body, the Shadow followed a single generation format throughout its seven-year sales run. After the 1987 launch as a hatchback trio, a two-door convertible joined the range for 1991 without any mechanical overhaul—making the mid-cycle addition one of the few notable changes during the model’s life.
Body Variants
Out of the gate, buyers could choose between a three-door or a larger five-door hatchback. In 1991 Dodge added a soft-top convertible (Plymouth abstained from offering a Sundance cabrio), giving drivers an open-top option without forcing them into the costlier Dodge Daytona package.
Design & Dimensions
At 4,361 mm long, 1,709 mm wide and only 1,339 mm tall, the Shadow sat low by 1987 standards, its slab-sided hatch shape maximizing cargo flexibility within a tidy footprint. The exterior evolved little—minor trim updates and optional ground effects kept the look contemporary through its final 1994 model year.
Legacy
The Shadow (and mechanically identical Plymouth Sundance) effectively replaced the rear-wheel-drive Omni/Horizon line, bridging buyers to Chrysler’s Neon program in 1995. While never collectable, the model provided a stop-gap affordable compact for Dodge showrooms and served as a common rental-lot staple throughout the early 1990s.
