Long before the Sprinter arrived, Dodge ruled American roads with the Ram Van—a full-size workhorse produced from 1971 to 2003 that replaced the cab-forward A100 and became a fixture of tradespeople, churches and airport shuttles.
History
The Dodge Ram Van debuted for the 1971 model year as the successor to the quirky, forward-control Dodge A100. Over one uninterrupted 32-year run, the same basic body-on-frame architecture sold through three corporate eras (Chrysler, DaimlerChrysler) and only two major facelifts, quietly outselling more modern rivals until production ended in December 2002.
Engineering
Built on Chrysler’s B-platform, the van abandoned its predecessor’s forward-control layout for a conventional one, using a shared ladder frame and powertrains with the popular D-series pickups. The revised design offered easy engine access via a forward-hinged hood while retaining a cavernous, flat-load interior sized for commercial, passenger or specialized upfits.
Model Range
Initially badged simply Van and Sportsman, the family expanded after 1980’s Ram rebranding into three distinct body styles: the cargo-only Ram Van, the windowed Ram Wagon passenger hauler, and a rare cutaway chassis that ended after 1979.
Legacy
With over three decades of production and minimal changes, the Ram Van became a visual constant on American streets. Its vast interior and dependable mechanicals made it a favorite for custom campers, conversion companies and even Hollywood prop vehicles, ensuring B-series vans remain sought after in the used RV and van-life markets.
